10 Minute/One Act Screen Play revised
This excerpt is from my story “Wings”
(Annabel invites Johnny inside. Johnny follows Annabel into the kitchen. Annabel cooks some popcorn, grabs a bottle of water for herself, hands Johnny a Pepsi and grabs a couple napkins. They both head upstairs to Annabel’s room when the popcorn finishes popping. Annabel sets the bag of popcorn on the bed along with her water bottle and the napkins. She walks over to her stereo and turns on “Angels and Airwaves; Shove” She starts to softly sing to herself as she plops down on her bed. Johnny takes off his jackets, sets it on Annabel’s chair, and plops down next to her. Johnny cracks open his Pepsi and takes a drink, then sets it down on Annabel’s nightstand)
Johnny: “This band always makes me think of you when I hear them playing.”
(Annabel smiles to herself as she opens the bag of popcorn)
Annabel: “Yeah, I can see why. They are my favorite band. They’ve gotten me through some really rough times throughout my life.”
(Annabel softly sings to herself) “Forget the things that you own, and travel almost anywhere you can go.Dance across the tree tips, set them ablaze. Soaking in their pleasant warm summer haze.
Johnny: “Like when you lost your dad?! I like when you sing. You have a pretty voice.”
(Annabel giggles a little, blushes and smiles, as if he’s shy towards Johnny’s compliment)
Annabel: “Yeah.. When I lost my dad I listened to them nonstop. They gave me a sense of hope, they took my mind off of everything. They seemed to erase the horrible mood I was constantly in, at least while I was listening to them, and thank you.
(Annabel looks off into the distance where she has a picture of her and her dad. She sighs, thinking about how much she misses him)
Johnny: “Their lyrics really have a lot of meaning. They inspire me, they want to be a better person. Kind of like you.”
(Annabel looks at Johnny with a sparkle in her eye and a huge grin)
Annabel: “You’re too sweet. I totally agree! Their lyrics inspire me to be the best I can be. I listen to them whenever I’m having a bad day, or when I’m feeling down. They always make me feel better. I’ve never understood why radio stations play music about sex and drugs, but they won’t play music that actually has inspiration behind it. Their music can inspire the ever day person, their music could make a difference in the world, if enough people listened.
(Lyrics playing in the background)
“If I had my own world, I’d love it for all that’s inside it.There’d be no more wars, death or riots. There’d be no more police, packed-parking lots,Guns, bombs sounding off.
Johnny: “I completely agree.”
(Johnny takes a sip from his Pepsi, grabs a handful of popcorn and eats it while Annabel changes the song)
Johnny: “I love the way you think, Bell. You could change the lives of so many people if you got out of that shell of yours.”
(Annabel sighed and took a second to reply)
Annabel: “Trust me.. I’ve tried. I have this fear inside of me, I’m not sure where it comes from, but I’m too afraid to be heard. I just want to fit in, I don’t want to stand out and be rejected.”
(Johnny shakes his head)
Johnny: “But that’s just it, Bell. You were born to stand out. You’re unique in so many different ways. There’s no reason to be afraid. If people got to know you the way I know you, you would never be rejected. You should embrace who you’re truly meant to be.”
(Annabel eats some popcorn, puts her hair up in a ponytail and yawns)
Johnny: “I wish you could see yourself the way I see you, Bell.”
Annabel: “You’re the greatest best friend anyone could ever ask for, Johnny. I’m thankful I’ve been lucky enough to know you for so long. It’s going to be weird, not seeing you every day. And I’m just.. not the outgoing type, I never have been. I’ve always been the quiet one.”
(Annabel thinks to herself. Looking Johnny up and down, lost in thought)
Johnny: “But you can be the outgoing type. The only person stopping you, is you. You’re making all these big changes in your life. Why not add this to your list? Eventually you’re going to have to break out of that shell, especially when you leave. You can’t live the rest of your life walking with your head down. Eventually you’re going to have to talk to other.”
(Annabel sighs and starts to shake her head no, eats some popcorn and takes a sip from her water bottle)
Johnny: “Just hear me out, Bell. You could inspire so many people, you could make a difference in the world. Isn’t that what you’ve always wanted?”
(Annabel smiled to herself, realizing just how much Johnny paid attention to her)
Annabel: “Yeah! If I could inspire someone, just for a pure second, that would mean so much to me. I want to inspire people to love themselves and more importantly, to love the world around them. I want to inspre people to be the best I know they can be.. but..”
(Johnny cuts Annabel off)
Johnny: "BUT WHAT Annabel?”
(Johnny throws his hands up, gets up from the bed and starts pacing back and forth)
Johnny: “You’re so damn stubborn. I don’t get you half the time.”
(Annabel takes in a deep breath, contemplating on what to say next)
Annabel: "I’m just scared.... But you're right. Nobody is stopping me except myself."
(Johnny sits back down on the bed)
Johnny: "I dare you to add this to your list. I promise it’ll change your life, like you’ve wanted so badly. Travel the world, make a difference in all the lives you cross paths with. Make the world a better place and then tell your children about it someday."
(Annabel contemplates the challenge)
Annabel: "Challenge accepted!"
(Annabel smiles)
Johnny: “I’m going to miss you when you leave, Bell. I hope you stay in contact with me. It’s hard enough, not knowing when I’ll see you again.”
Annabel: “It’s not like I’m leaving forever. I just don’t want to put a set time on how long I’m going to be gone. I’m going to let the universe decide that for me. And of course I’m going to stay in contact with you! You’ll probably end up getting sick of me because of how much I’m going to call
Johnny: “I’ll never get sick of you, Bell.”
(Annabel smiles at Johnny and Johnny smiles back. They stare at each other for a few seconds in silence. The music had stopped playing in the background. Annabel gets up, turns her stereo off, sits back down on her bed and turns her TV on. Johnny takes a drink from his Pepsi and eats some more popcorn. They both decide to watch “The Prestige”, although they don't pay much attention. They continue to talk about life and what the future has in store for the both of them)
